Project LIT: Project LIT Book Club is a national literacy movement. In its simplest form at A. Z. Kelley, it is a weekly opportunity for 4th grade students and teachers to come together in small groups to discuss themes and takeaways from amazing books like Wishtree, New Kid, and Wonder. One goal of Project Lit is to increase access to high quality, culturally relevant books. Books that allow ALL students to see themselves in the pages. It is also an opportunity to empower our students to engage in our community in a meaningful way. Through the process, our Project LIT students gain essential SEL and 21st century skills, from empathy and kindness to teamwork and communication, as they become the leaders and readers who change our world. We have a monthly large group meeting where we discuss the book we have recently finished. 4th grade students are selected through teacher recommendations and assigned a faculty member as their group facilitator for their weekly meeting where each student has a voice and can share reflections of what they have read. We hope that all our students will fall in love with reading. We hope that all our students will be the catalyst for change in our world.
